Timber Doors – Repairing Sticking Timber Doors

Sticking timber doors are annoying. Fortunately, repairing them is not that difficult once you’ve find the cause of the problem. Sticking timber doors can be caused by anything from heat and humidity and incorrect size or placement of screws to paint build-up that narrows the necessary gap between door and the frame, and moisture that makes the door swell. Below you will find some tips on how to get over some of these problems.

Fixing Loose Screws

Loose screws may be a culprit for sticking doors. To know if this is the cause, open the door about 100 mm. Use your arms to pull and push the door towards the hinges. If you sense any movement then that means that the screws are loose in the door or at the jamb. If you see a cracked paint around the hinge then this could be the problem. Work on tightening and fixing the loose screws to repair the sticking door. You may require a longer or even larger gauge screw. If this is an ongoing problem a floor or wall mounted door stop may be required or the hinge/s may be worn and need replacing.

What to Do with a Swelling Door

A swelling door caused by heat and humidity is a common. If the weather is humid or if the room is exposed to steam and humidity then that could mean that too much moisture is getting into the exposed timber through the joints or unpainted areas. Too much moisture causes the door to swell and then stick. You need to plane off a small amount at the affected area, but do not too much off as it could become a large gap when the swelling subsides. Any bare areas of the door and edges need to be primed and painted; this includes top and bottom edges, so the door will have to be removed to do the job properly. In some cases the hinges may need to be re-housed, particularly if the affected area is where the lock or latch is located.

Removing Paint Build-up

First, you have to examine the build-up and determine its thickness as well as the area of contact between the jamb and the door. If the entire door is sticking, you may need to remove the door and plane it, as mentioned in the above paragraph. If you do not have the right power tools or if you are not confident with your carpentry skills, enlist the help of a professional carpenter to do the job. If there are only small areas of the door that has build-up, get a screwdriver, cork sanding block and or plane, pencil, ruler, sandpaper, and paint. Mark the sticking area with a pencil and sand/plane it off. Remove the door, if it is binding on the hinge side or if the area is on the bottom part of the door. Sand/plane in position if otherwise. Use a fine sandpaper to finish it off. Screw the door back if you’ve removed it then prime and repaint the door.

Repairing sticking timber doors can be a lot of work. But you can save yourself time and hassle by getting to the cause of the problem right away.
